Pigmentation of the skin is caused by an increase in melanin in that particular area. The main cause of increased melanin production is careless sun exposure. When skin is regularly exposed to strong sunlight, uneven pigment production can occur and dark patches can form on the skin. These spots tend to fade during the winter months, but many times they do not disappear completely and remain on the skin as dark areas of discolouration.
